Printmaking / Etching & engraving

Etching & engraving

A line with physical depth.

From image to printing plate

The plate, paper, ink and pressure all shape the result. The technical approach is agreed after reviewing your project.

The process

Intaglio printmaking from drawings, digital images and original sketches, with plates prepared for hand printing.
Our practice includes etching, drypoint, photo-etching and combined techniques. We review the source image and agree how it will be transferred to the plate, including any film preparation for photo-etching.
How it works
01

Prepare the plate

The image is developed on a metal printing plate.
02

Create recessed areas

For etching, the image is bitten into the plate. Photo-etching uses a photographic transfer stage.
03

Ink & wipe

Ink remains in the recesses after the plate surface is wiped.
04

Print under pressure

Paper receives the image as it passes through the press.
A simplified explanation of the printing principle. The exact production method is agreed for each project.
Etching uses chemical action; engraving and drypoint use tools to work the plate directly. These are different approaches within intaglio printmaking.
